San Juan Mission "Targets"

These targets have been placed in precise positions on the San Juan mission. Their position is then monitored over time, so that any tiny movements can be detected.

Restoration of Frescoes on Mission Conception

This is an example of one of the frescoes that is being restored to its original condition. The surface is first conditioned, and then stucco is reapplied to bring the surface back. Once that is done, then the stucco can be stained and painted to match the original.

Graffiti on the Wall

This image shows some of the "graffiti" exposed by the removal of the surface stucco. In this case, we see what is likely to be the signature of one of the original stone masons, who left his mark in 1839, when this mission was constructed.

St. Francis Facade Restoration
San Jose Mission

These "before" and "after" images show the dramatic difference that is made by careful restoration. The top photo shows the damaged San Joaquin facade at the San Jose mission.

The lower photos show what is done with an extensive restoration project. This work took place over a series of months at the St. Francis Facade of the San Jose mission.
